INTERSTATE 49 – After heading North on Interstate 49 for the past hour or so, drivers evacuating the Acadiana area have been spotted performing frenzied 180° handbrake turns upon realizing that they’re heading directly to Shreveport.
The realization began around 30 minutes ago with one driver performing the emergency maneuver in the middle of the interstate. A domino effect then took place with other people realizing exactly where they were headed, and deciding on the spot that they’d rather ride out a Category 3 hurricane at home than head to Northern Louisiana.
“We were just heading down the interstate and following the evacuation route signage minding our own business”, explained Lafayette resident Barbara Jensen, “We had everything packed up. The kids were in the back, the dog was on my lap. We were ready to go wherever the road took us and be safe.
Then we saw the sign for Shreveport. My husband was driving at the time, and he must have seen it at the same time as I did. Next thing I know we’re pulling a stunt that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Fast and Furious movie, and we’re heading back South again.
We’d rather take our chances in Lafayette than be safe in Shreveport. We may be without power and we may be in a foot of salt water for a week, but it’s still an improvement.”
It’s believed that approximately 10,000 people have decided to stay put than head North.

If only the I-49 ICC had been finished they could pass right on through to Texarkana without stopping.
It may have been jus passing though we had to pass threw there to get to Texarkana ar
Why not go to Shreveport? Is it not a safe city or something?
I couldn’t blame them not 1 bit- because like they said they more safer with the hurricane— you may enter Shreveport and be shot to death soon upon arrival- because the killing rate is ridiculous out there and if you not familiar with the area you made end up in the wrong place– great choice to turn back. Stay safe!
So these idiots never saw a map before getting on the road??
Take it easy! Folks up there don’t want to move down here either. These are jokes, folks, but Shreveport is a whole different cultural vibe. And they don’t have decent french bread. We remember that from Katrina days.
How unbelievable sad and embarrassing that people would rather face a Hurricane and the aftermath than face our city! When is law enforcement and the city government going to clean up this city!
Wow did anyone tell these geniuses that they could went to or texaraknan, Monroe , Dallas Longveiw or Arkansas or other places I say too much beer and no common sense
